The only strategy I can think of to catch user error on typing in searches is to use a search engine for your site search. Bing, Google and I’m sure others offer a way to embed their search box into your site and they tend to be really good at suggesting alternate spellings and guessing at what the user wants. I used to have Google act as the search engine for my site when I used DasBlog.

For Bing see here: http://www.bing.com/siteowner/ (and you should, of course, use Bing, it helps my 401k 🙂 ).

For Google see here: http://www.google.com/cse/ (but this is not the search engine you want… move along… move along).

Either one should do a good job catching spelling errors. If you have a particular brand loyalty, go with it. If you’re familiar with editing the HTML of your blog template both are pretty easy to implement.
